BOOK REVIEWS:
"Exactly as the title implies, Dr Price-Mohr has compiled a series of studies of the words of Jesus in Matthew and with specific reference to the Old Testament. Instead of making any efforts to divert the reader into higher Biblical criticism techniques, her style is that of a person of faith directing the thoughts of a person of faith. The book lends itself to a daily devotion on the words of Jesus. It is perhaps not written with a view of being read through in one go but to be dipped into or used section by section, day by day as a study aid and prompt for thought and prayer.
There are few apologetics but instead a straightforward linking of Jesus to the Old Testament prophets and writers and Dr Price-Mohr rightly reminds the reader that these are writings that Jesus would have been extremely familiar with. There are frequent insights that are helpful, for example, when Jesus tells Simon Peter to 'get behind Me Satan' (Matt.16:23) which on first reading appears to have Jesus addressing Peter as the devil himself, Dr Price-Mohr is able to offer a clear explanation of the language and the reason why 'adversary' might be a better understanding and translation of the NT Greek.
To suggest that this book is simply a canter through the words of Jesus in Matthew is to sell it short. This book is much more than just referencing the words of Jesus with the OT. It is a comprehensive search of OT texts that Dr Price-Mohr suggests might be useful insights into the was Jesus was speaking. She distils her views and interpretations of explicit and implicit OT texts to help the reader to contemplate and pursue. Her interpretation and explanation is often insightful, interesting and helpful. I commend it to anyone who is looking for a new way to study Matthew's Gospel and understand a little more of the background of Jesus."

"Dr R M Price-Mohr's Study of the Words of Jesus as recorded in the Gospel of St Matthew is a well-structured study illustrating the importance of understanding Matthew's writing for his Jewish audience in the context of the Old Testament, the Hebrew Bible. Each bite-sized study of Matthew's Gospel, broken down into verse quoting the words of Jesus, transliterated from the original Greek, within each chapter, offers the reader the opportunity to explore the relevant reference to the Old Testament alongside how Jesus' words might resonate today.
Dr Price-Mohr, in this comprehensive study, offers individuals or groups a way into approaching Matthew's Gospel with new eyes focussing on how Jesus went about revealing the role of the Son of Man whilst fulfilling, as opposed to abolishing, the law and prophets. For anyone wishing to delve deeper to gain a greater understanding of the contextual theology of St Matthew's Gospel with particular reference to Jesus' Jewish roots, this Study book of Dr Price-Mohr is a gift of study material.
Thank you, Dr Price-Mohr."

"From the publishers of, among others, a dozen of the more recent books by the Rev Trevor Dearing, comes a magisterial survey - exegetical and expository - of the sayings and dialogues of the Lord Jesus as recorded by a first century collector of taxes, Matthew Levi, in his gospel. This collection, both scholarly, anointed, and boldly practical, comes from Dr Price-Mohr, eminently qualified as an educator. Each of Jesus' sayings are related to quotations from the Old Testament (the only Scriptures that Jesus knew from childhood). Particularly enlightening and challenging are the sections on the Beatitudes and the whole of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters 5-7). Also the sections (chapters 23-27) in the gospel covering His firm, calm and rational debates with the Jewish religious leaders; His clear warnings in chapter 24 ('Little Apocalypse') about future disasters awaiting the first century Jewish nation (and indeed all nations in the twenty-first century); and finally His calm and almost eirenic sayings when under arrest, on trial in an all-night kangaroo court, enduring merciless flogging, and finally a slow, agonizing death by public crucifixion.
Dr Price-Mohr concludes the study with positive and challenging elucidations of Jesus' stupendous claims and promises after His return from the grave. This whole book is well-structured, sensible, and anointed by the Holy Spirit; it should be read by the present ten dozen bishops in the Church of England as a salutary reminder of the Biblical roots of our crisis-ridden national church."
